After much anticipation, the announcement is official: the Verizon IndyCar series will be coming to Austin’s Circuit of The Americas!
Set to debut March 22nd – 24th of 2019, COTA will host the second race of the 17 event series. IndyCar officials see Austin as great fit for everyone involved, from the popularity of the sport in the area, to the drivers enjoyment of the facility, and even the benefits for sponsors through associating with a fun, popular city.
Bobby Epstein, chairman of Circuit of The Americas, said: “We’re really excited. This will be one of our crown-jewel events. We can really do this up big, turn it into a festival weekend. It’s going to be spectacular.”
With Austin’s booming sports industry, Epstein is shooting for crowds over 100,000, combining the races with multiple stages, live music from both locals and national headliners, and entertainment of all kinds.
These types of large events are the norm for COTA, which boasts its own Austin360 Amphitheater, suites, and capacity for 120,000 visitors. Bringing IndyCar to this popular, 20-turn Formula 1 track extends the roster of motorsports events, which includes NASA Championships, F1, World Rallycross, Vintage racing, MotoGP, and more.
Fans can expect plenty of excitement from the open-wheel IndyCar races, with straightaway speeds of up to 230 mph, and a naturally hilly 3.41 mile course – as well as a 251-foot observation tower. As Epstein predicts, the race will be the central draw, but the event will be a much larger affair. COTA will likely pull out all the stops to make their inaugural IndyCar event something truly memorable.
While the length of the contract hasn’t been disclosed, COTA signed a multi-year deal with Verizon IndyCar, so fans can expect these events to become a recurring addition to each year’s roster of races.
Austin residents, and those in surrounding areas, can look forward to yet another amazing event at Circuit of The Americas, and those in the IndyCar industry are sure to love the massive, state-of-the-art COTA facility. Everyone involved is looking forward to next spring!
